Police Officer
The City of Sterling Police Department accepts applications and tests for the position of Police Officer throughout the year. Applicants will be contacted with specific information when future testing dates are scheduled.

Police Officer Salary: $2,127.34 bi-weekly plus benefits

Job Summary
Perform individually and as member of a team and participate in the following activities: enforce local, state and federal ordinances, regulations and laws; apprehend suspects; respond to and investigate disturbances and accident calls; patrol and conduct surveillance; receive training and maintain skills proficiency; operate a vehicle during routine and emergency situations; communicate with the public in normal and adverse situations; complete verbal and written reports and documentation; work independently following written and verbal instructions that are general in nature. Must be able and available to work shifts, weekends and holidays.

Required Skills/Experience:
Must possess one of the following:
Colorado POST Certification, or Letter of Conditional Peace Officer Authority, or Provisional Certification;
Valid driver’s license and good driving record;
Must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
Must be a United States citizen;
Be in good physical condition;
Have vision of or correctable to 20/20;
No felony or domestic violence convictions;
Spanish/English bilingual skills highly desired.

Upon completion and submittal of your application, you should receive an email notification stating your application has been received. If you do not receive this notification, check your application for areas that need to be completed. Then recertify and submit your application (Step 5).

After your completed application is received, it will be screened for basic qualifications. Your application may be rejected if there are any omissions or incomplete information. Any application submitted with false or misrepresenting information will immediately be removed from consideration in the hiring process. If you meet the basic qualifications, you will be contacted and scheduled for entry testing.

Entrance-level testing process consists of the following components:
Written Examination (IPMA-HR test)
Physical Ability Test
Sit-ups (Maximum reps completed in 1 minute)
Push-ups (Maximum reps completed in 1 minute)
1.5 Mile Run
Police Department Oral Board Interview
Computer Voice Stress Analyst-Job Suitability Assessment
Extensive Background Investigation
Psychological Evaluation
Physical Evaluation
Drug Test

Post-Hiring Requirements
Newly hired officers must successfully participate in and pass the department’s field training program.

Lateral Entry
Lateral entry salary adjustments are available and determined on a case-by-case basis. Factors determining adjustments include, but are not limited to years of law enforcement experience and the level of comparative law enforcement experience. Requests for lateral entry made after the Conditional Job offer will not be considered. This program is subject to budgetary considerations and the ability for the City to fund the program.

Police Academy Tuition Reimbursement:
Newly hired officers who have graduated from a Colorado POST Academy and attained a Letter of Conditional Peace Officer Authority within the previous twelve months are eligible for reimbursement of documented academy tuition expenses. Reimbursement of those expenses will occur over the officer’s first four years of employment. This program is subject to budgetary considerations and the ability for the City to fund the program.

Educational Attainment Pay Differential:
If you hold an Associate degree or higher, you may be eligible for the Educational Attainment Pay Differential. Depending on the type of degree and the field of study, police officers may receive a pay differential added to their base pay. This program is subject to budgetary considerations and the ability for the City to fund the program.

Ride-Along
Applicants are encouraged to schedule a ride-along with a City of Sterling Police Officer. Once the ride-along application has been submitted, please allow 1-3 business days to process it.
